Ruby ball styli with ceramic stems

Ruby ball styli with ceramic stems

Features of Ruby ball styli

1. Ruby

  • A stylus with ruby is suitable for almost all measurements. Ruby is a hard material with little wear. It can scan spherical workpieces with high precision.

2. Lightweight and strong

  • Ceramic stylus has the same rigidity as steel stylus, but is much lighter than tungsten carbide stylus. Stylus with ceramic stylus will break when it collides, which can provide additional collision protection for the probe.

3. Not easy to corrode and resistant to high temperature

  • Heat resistance means that stainless steel can maintain its excellent physical and mechanical properties at high temperatures and is not easy to rust in a humid environment.

Tungsten Carbide Probes

Tungsten Carbide Probes

Features of Tungsten Carbide Probes

1. Tungsten carbide: rigidity and toughness

  • Tungsten carbide probes have excellent rigidity, especially suitable for probes with smaller ball and probe diameters.

2. Stainless steel: not easy to corrode at high temperatures

  • It can maintain its excellent physical and mechanical properties at high temperatures and is not easy to rust in humid environments

3. Threads: various specifications

  • Select probes with different threads according to the requirements of the measuring equipment, usually with M2/M3/M4 thread types

How Does a Touch Probe Stylus Function?

The stylus is the component of a touch probe that physically interacts with the workpiece. When the stylus contacts the part, it causes the probe’s internal mechanism to shift, triggering a signal. This signal facilitates the capture of precise measurements. Each contact produces a data point, represented by coordinate values in the X, Y, and Z axes. From these points, features such as dimensions, shape, and position can be accurately calculated.

Precision Styli

The Significance of Precision Styli

The design and quality of a stylus play a critical role in tactile metrology measurements. Imperfections such as poor roundness of the stylus ball, incorrect positioning, ball deformation, or excessive thread tolerance can result in significant deformation of the measuring rod. These errors can contribute to measurement uncertainty and potentially reduce measurement accuracy by up to 10%, underscoring the importance of high-quality precision styli for reliable and accurate results.
